UK sentences two hackers tied to $115M crypto ransom scheme

Summary

Two men tied to the Scattered Spider hacking group were sentenced in the UK to five years and six months after pleading guilty at their first court appearance. British authorities said the group was involved in major ransomware and crypto-extortion attacks in the UK and US, including the 2024 breach of London’s public transport network, which caused about £29 million in losses and recovery costs. US prosecutors previously linked Scattered Spider to at least 120 intrusions, $115 million in crypto ransom payments from at least 47 US companies, and the Caesars Entertainment breach that led to a $15 million Bitcoin ransom. The FBI also seized about $36 million from wallets tied to the group.
