U.S. regulator warns about cheating risks in 'mention markets' on prediction platforms
The CFTC warned that prediction-market contracts tied to what a named person says or does may be especially vulnerable to manipulation, since the person or associates could influence outcomes using inside knowledge. Its staff advisory reminds platforms that listed derivatives must not be readily susceptible to manipulation. Rather than banning mention markets outright, the regulator said contract design, independent verifiability and substantial public scrutiny could help address risks, and operators should explain safeguards in regulatory filings. The CFTC has recently penalized a former White House teleprompter operator for betting on information about President Trump’s planned remarks. Kalshi also imposed a lifetime trading ban on former Representative George Santos after allegations he bet on his own speech appearance.
