US Voters Back AI Data Center Restrictions in At Least 29 Communities
Voters in at least 29 U.S. jurisdictions backed measures restricting or slowing data-center development, including bans, added approval requirements and advisory proposals. Ballotpedia tracked 41 such measures across 10 states. In Ohio, all 10 charter measures supported by Conserve Ohio passed, and several communities approved restrictions by large margins. Illinois voters in Joliet Township rejected an advisory proposal supporting AI data centers, while Janesville, Wisconsin, required another public vote before major development at a former GM site. Opposition centers on data centers’ electricity and water use, noise, grid capacity and limited public input. AI firms are responding with lobbying and public-relations efforts. The votes coincided with political victories by candidates advocating tighter oversight; industry leaders warn broad restrictions could threaten investment.
