Virtuals Protocol Discord server hacked, fake Google links posted
Virtuals Protocol's Discord server was hacked on January 8, leading to fraudulent links mimicking its website appearing on Google Search. A moderator's private key was compromised, resulting in the breach, which has since been resolved. Cybersecurity firm Scam Sniffer identified three malicious links impersonating the protocol's site and advised users to verify official links. Phishing scams and private key compromises are significant security threats in 2024, with phishing costing crypto users over $1 billion across 296 campaigns last year. Private key compromises resulted in $855 million in losses. Overall, crypto hacks and scams rose 21% year-over-year, with incidents increasing from 282 to 303. Centralized services faced a 1,000% increase in attacks, and experts warn that threats from AI and quantum computing could exacerbate vulnerabilities in centralized systems.
