What is the Fusaka Upgrade? Ethereum’s Biggest Scaling Bet Yet
Fusaka, Ethereum’s major upgrade slated for Q4 2025, will introduce sweeping changes to both the execution and consensus layers, aiming to expand data capacity, boost defenses against denial-of-service attacks, and provide new tools for users and developers. Fusaka’s central feature is PeerDAS, a data availability sampling system where each node stores only a fraction of “blob” data, instead of the full set, increasing blob throughput by up to eight times without further burdening node operators. Blobs, introduced earlier, allow rollups to post large amounts of transaction data to Ethereum efficiently. Fusaka also revamps blob pricing with EIP-7918, ensuring blob usage always has a minimum cost, and introduces blob parameter-only forks (EIP-7892), allowing quicker adjustment of blob throughput. Security measures limit the impact of attack scenarios. User-facing improvements include transaction preconfirmations (EIP-7917) and enhanced tooling for developers. End-users don’t need to take action, but validators and node operators must upgrade their clients as scheduled: Holesky (Oct 1), Sepolia (Oct 14), Hoodi (Oct 28), and mainnet (Dec 3, 2025). Fusaka is a significant step toward scaling Ethereum to meet rising demand from layer-2 rollups.
