Why anti-CBDC Trump refuses to sign bill banning a digital dollar through 2030
Trump canceled a planned signing for a bipartisan housing bill after linking his support to passage of the SAVE America Act, a separate elections bill requiring documentary proof of citizenship and photo ID for federal voting. The housing package mainly aims to expand supply and ease financing, but it also includes a temporary federal ban on a Fed-issued CBDC through 2030. Trump already opposes a central bank digital currency and had barred federal agencies from pursuing one by executive order, so the move delays legislation that would make that policy more durable. The bill passed both chambers with veto-proof margins, but Trump’s action could test Republican support if he vetoes it. Cancellation does not kill the bill because it had not yet been formally presented to the White House. Supporters of the housing bill say it would reduce costs; critics say Trump is tying housing relief to an unrelated election fight.
