Winklevoss twins’ Gemini exchange selects Malta as Europe MiCA hub
Gemini, founded by the Winklevoss twins, is establishing a compliance hub in Malta to align with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. This decision follows the receipt of its sixth European virtual asset service provider (VASP) registration from the Malta Financial Services Authority in December 2024. Although Gemini has not yet obtained a MiCA license, it holds VASP licenses in six EU countries, including Malta, France, and Spain. The MiCA framework aims to standardize regulations across Europe, allowing Gemini to create a unified onboarding process for customers. While the MiCA regulations enhance regulatory clarity, uncertainty remains regarding the treatment of certain stablecoins, particularly Tether's USDT, which faces compliance challenges.
