Zcash targets November for NU7 mainnet upgrade with 25-second blocks
Zcash developers are targeting Nov. 5 for NU7 mainnet activation after reaching unanimous agreement on the upgrade’s contents and timeline. Testnet activation is planned for Oct. 6, with a final mainnet decision on Oct. 20 after testnet evaluation. NU7 would shorten Zcash’s target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, disable version 4 transactions, and add the Network Sustainability Mechanism while preserving the halving schedule. The supply reintroduction would begin in February 2031. The upgrade is not expected to require new transaction formats or major wallet changes, though full nodes, indexers, and explorers may need updates. ZEC holders strongly supported both the faster block interval and keeping halvings. ZEC also rallied sharply, rising about 20% in a day amid strong outperformance by privacy coins.
