Anthropic warns ‘AI worms’ may autonomously spread across devices like a virus
Anthropic’s Frontier Red Team warned that autonomous AI worms could begin spreading among insecure internet-connected devices, including smart TVs and appliances. Researchers said small models may be capable of self-replicating on commercial IoT devices within months, creating a threat without a central shutdown point. The warning was linked to broader concerns about AI’s potential to break cryptographic signatures protecting crypto wallets. Glassnode co-founder Rafael Schultze-Kraft said 6.26 million BTC are in addresses potentially vulnerable to AI or quantum attacks, much of it due to address reuse. Ethereum researcher Justin Drake urged users to migrate to fresh wallets, while Dragonfly’s Haseeb Qureshi disputed that migration would solve the threat.
