Better launches Bitcoin-backed mortgages powered by Coinbase
Better and Coinbase have made their Bitcoin-backed mortgage product widely available in the US. The program lets homebuyers use Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment without selling it, alongside a Fannie Mae-backed mortgage. Borrowers must post BTC worth at least 250% of the down payment loan, and the coins are held in Coinbase Prime custody until the loan is repaid or refinanced. The two loans share the same rate and amortization term and are paid in one monthly bill. Falling Bitcoin prices do not by themselves trigger margin calls or change loan terms, but Better can liquidate the collateral if a borrower is 60 days delinquent. Eligibility requires US residency, a verified Coinbase account, and standard Better underwriting approval. The launch reflects broader efforts to include crypto in mortgage risk assessments, as US housing prices remain historically high.
