Big Tech Joins White House Energy Pledge as Iran Tensions Threaten Higher Costs
Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, and xAI have signed the White House’s Ratepayer Protection Pledge to pay for all electricity generation and grid upgrades required for their AI data centers. This commitment aims to prevent household electricity costs from rising as AI infrastructure expands. Under the pledge, companies must build, purchase, or fund the power required for their AI operations, as well as transmission lines and other infrastructure, regardless of usage. They also agree to negotiate separate utility rates so these costs are not passed on to consumers. This move responds to local concerns about increased electricity demand, water use, and public infrastructure costs from new data centers. Participants are investing in new power capacity and workforce training, with Google, for example, adding over 7,800 megawatts to the Texas grid. The pledge is designed to maintain grid affordability and reliability while supporting the growth of AI technology.
