Binance gave Russian authorities client data used in terrorism financing case: Report

Summary

Russian investigators reportedly used information from Binance in a case against IT specialist Yuri Belenkiy, who is accused of using cryptocurrency donations to support Ukrainian military-related groups. Law enforcement documents reviewed by Reuters say Russia asked Binance for Belenkiy’s transaction history and received records linking him to more than $700 in crypto transfers from January 2023 to March 2024, along with his personal details, passport copy, and Bulgarian residency permit. The Investigative Committee says the transfers went to the Ukrainian military and a banned group identified as the Azov Brigade/Regiment. Binance had already exited Russia in September 2023 by વેચing its local business to CommEX. Binance said it cooperates with lawful law-enforcement requests but would not comment on individual cases.
