'Bitcoin Senator' Cynthia Lummis Will Not Run for Reelection
Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), a prominent supporter of cryptocurrency in Congress, announced she will not seek reelection and will retire in January 2027. Citing the demanding nature of legislative work and feeling unable to commit to another six-year term, Lummis stated, “I feel like a sprinter in a marathon. The energy required doesn’t match up.” Lummis played a key role in passing the GENIUS Act, the first major U.S. legislation establishing a federal framework for stablecoins. She has also been at the forefront of efforts to pass a broader crypto market structure bill alongside Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, though this legislation faces significant congressional obstacles and industry disagreements. Earlier in 2025, she introduced the Bitcoin Act, which would require the government to buy $80 billion in Bitcoin over five years, aiming to create a strategic federal reserve. Lummis’ announcement drew praise from crypto industry leaders for her legislative support of digital assets.
