Bitcoiners To Quantum-Proof BTC 2026: BIP-360, Hash-Based Signatures
A group of Bitcoin advocates and crypto fund managers is pushing for the adoption of quantum-resistant signatures, warning that the perception of an impending “quantum threat” could impact Bitcoin markets before quantum computing becomes a real danger. BIP-360, a draft proposal, would give Bitcoin users a post-quantum signature option to protect assets vulnerable to potential advances in quantum computing. Proponents argue for implementation by 2026 and migration by 2028, warning of risks if action is delayed. Some experts, however, downplay the urgency, stating that quantum computing is still decades away from posing a practical threat to Bitcoin. The recent decline in usage of the Taproot transaction format, which is perceived as more quantum-vulnerable, suggests user concern. Cryptographers propose alternatives like hash-based signature schemes as potential solutions for a post-quantum era, emphasizing reliability on established hash functions.
