Bithumb Says Hackers Accessed Internal System, Leaking Personal Data

Summary

Bithumb, South Korea’s second-largest crypto exchange, reported unauthorized access to its internal mobile groupware system and a leak of personal information. It is investigating whether customer data was affected; an industry source said some customer information had leaked. The incident coincided with breaches at brokerage Daishin Securities and asset manager Mirae Asset, amid a broader wave of attacks on South Korean financial firms. Coinbase also said a vendor security incident exposed some customers’ contact data. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao warned that leaked information can enable phishing, SIM swapping and social engineering. Bithumb has not disclosed how its system was accessed. The breach adds to recent setbacks for the exchange, including a mistaken Bitcoin crediting incident and an anti-money-laundering fine.
