Bitwise Amends Ethereum ETF Filing To Include Staking Mechanics
Bitwise filed an amended S-1 for its spot Ethereum ETF that adds disclosure on staking, validator operations, slashing risk, and staking-yield accounting. The filing matters because staking is a major unresolved issue for spot ETH ETFs: ETH can generate protocol rewards through proof-of-stake, so an ETF that cannot stake may offer only price exposure and could lag direct staked ETH. The amendment does not mean staking is approved. The SEC still has not allowed staking inside a spot Ethereum ETF, and the filing is only a proposal. It does, however, show how an issuer might structure and disclose staking mechanics, custody, operational risks, and reward treatment if regulators eventually permit it. Investors care because staking could improve returns but also adds complexity, regulatory uncertainty, and risks such as slashing, downtime, and validator concentration.
