Polish prosecutors charge suspect in Zondacrypto probe, seek pretrial detention
Polish prosecutors have formally charged Romana Ż. in an investigation into Zondacrypto, accusing him of joining an organized criminal group and helping misappropriate 7.8 million zlotys ($2.1 million) in user funds. Prosecutors also sought pretrial detention, saying he could flee or obstruct the case. He was detained on Sept. 5, questioned, denied the charges, and gave a statement. The allegations say he and others made unauthorized changes to computer records and interfered with exchange data processing and transmission to divert entrusted funds. Three other suspects detained on Sept. 2 were previously charged with money laundering, asset misappropriation, and organized-crime involvement, and a court ordered their detention. Prosecutors have estimated total losses tied to Zondacrypto at at least 350 million zlotys. The probe was merged with an investigation into the 2022 disappearance of BitBay founder Sylwester Suszek.
