Brazil’s largest lender becomes first bank to formalize crypto brokerage under new rules
Summary
Itaú Unibanco became the first Brazilian bank to formalize its crypto trading and custody services under the country’s new digital-asset rules, notifying the central bank ahead of the Oct. 30 deadline. The bank offers 15 cryptoassets, including bitcoin, ether and USDC. Under Resolution 520, eligible banks already active in crypto can notify the regulator, while dedicated providers must obtain authorization. Filings require independent technical certification; institutions that miss the deadline must stop crypto services within 30 days. Mercado Bitcoin says it is seeking authorization, and a separate restriction on banks dealing with unauthorized crypto providers begins Nov. 6.
