Canadian crypto ownership increases to 25%: Ontario survey
Canadian crypto ownership rose sharply, with 25% of adults holding cryptocurrencies in 2026, up from 10% in 2023, according to an Ontario Securities Commission survey of 2,360 people. Awareness also increased, with 59% saying they knew about crypto assets. The OSC said Canadians are engaging more with crypto markets, but understanding remains incomplete. About half of crypto owners checked whether a platform was registered before using it, yet many still misunderstood regulation, insurance coverage, and what transactions are possible. The findings suggest growing risk awareness alongside continued confusion. In response to fraud concerns, federal lawmakers have also proposed tighter rules, including possible bans on crypto political donations and digital asset ATMs.
