Circle is arming USDC with 1,000 IBM patents to secure its grip on global banking rails

Summary

Circle bought nearly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents, becoming the leading U.S. holder of blockchain patents. The portfolio spans blockchain, banking, financial services, supply-chain verification, and secure cloud infrastructure, and is meant to support USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and other onchain tools. The deal also gives Circle more leverage in cross-licensing, partnerships, and possible litigation as stablecoins move into mainstream settlement and payments. Many IBM patents focus on the intersection of blockchain and traditional finance, including settlement tied to off-chain payment rails, compliance recordkeeping, AML/KYC, sanctions checks, and card-network-linked blockchain settlement. Circle did not disclose which patents were included or the purchase price. Strategically, the acquisition may strengthen Circle’s position with banks and enterprises, but near-term revenue impact is likely limited. USDC has gained institutional traction and leads adjusted stablecoin transaction volume, yet still faces Tether’s larger liquidity base and new competition from Open Standard’s OUSD network, which includes IBM and major payments firms.
