Coinbase Wants to Be Canada's One-Stop Shop for Stocks, Crypto and Prediction Markets

Summary

Coinbase is pitching Canada on its “Everything Exchange” vision: a single app where users can trade crypto, stocks, ETFs, prediction markets, and eventually tokenized stocks from one account. Coinbase Canada CEO Eric Richmond says the company is moving beyond its identity as a crypto exchange and aims to make financial access “frictionless, seamless, and 24/7.” No Canada launch date is set yet. Coinbase says it is working with regulators and built a foothold by becoming the first international crypto exchange registered in Canada in April 2024. The model is already advancing in the U.S., where Coinbase has added stock and ETF trading for eligible users and launched prediction markets through Kalshi. Richmond said competitors like Robinhood and traditional banks don’t worry him, arguing that slower markets, bank hours, and delayed settlement are outdated. The final major hurdle in Canada is stablecoin regulation, expected in 2027, which would allow a Canadian-dollar stablecoin and fuller rollout.
