Coinbase's AI System Hallucinated a World Cup Result Before the Match Even Started
Coinbase’s AI-generated news system drew attention after sending a false notification claiming Norway had beaten Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match before the game had even started. The alert also said Erling Haaland scored twice, while Coinbase’s prediction market still showed the match as delayed. Screenshots spread on X, prompting CEO Brian Armstrong to investigate. Max Branzburg later said Coinbase fixed the incorrect story and updated its systems to reduce similar errors, noting that AI-powered, real-time trading insights still need tuning. The real match ended later with Norway defeating Brazil 2-1, and Haaland scoring twice in the second half, though the timing made the original alert clearly wrong. The incident comes as Coinbase expands beyond crypto trading, adding AI tools and prediction markets through Kalshi, while also pushing AI agents and automated wallet features.
