Crypto Goes to Hollywood
Netflix has begun production on “One Attempt Remaining,” marking a rare mainstream film centered on cryptocurrency. Until now, crypto has typically appeared in indie films and crime stories, often depicted negatively or as a device for criminal activity. Filmmakers note this reflects both public misunderstandings and crypto’s limited adoption in daily life—art mirrors reality, and widespread usage is still lacking. Crypto’s infrequent on-screen product placement is partly due to industry volatility conflicting with filmmaking timelines. Recent films, such as “Cold Wallet,” use crypto primarily as a plot device, following genre conventions. On-screen portrayals often satirize or cast crypto enthusiasts in an unflattering light, influenced by meme culture and market scandals like FTX and Terra, further cementing negative stereotypes. Some creators, however, seek to offer a more balanced or nuanced view, reflecting both the technology’s original promise and its excesses. As crypto matures and becomes a greater part of the economy, more nuanced and varied cinematic depictions are expected.
