Crypto hacks, scam losses reach $29M in December, lowest in 2024

Summary

Losses from crypto scams, exploits, and hacks decreased significantly in December 2024, totaling $28.6 million, the lowest monthly figure for the year. CertiK reported that exploits accounted for $26.7 million of these losses, with notable incidents including a $2.1 million exploit on DeFi platform GemPad and a $1 million hack of the FEG token bridge. PeckShield recorded $24.7 million in hack losses for December, a 71% decrease from November. The most significant incident involved a $12.3 million loss from LastPass users due to a data breach in December 2022. Overall, $2.3 billion was stolen across 165 incidents in 2024, marking a 40% increase from 2023 but still 37% lower than 2022 figures. The rise in thefts is attributed to increased access control breaches in centralized exchanges and custodians.
