Phishing scams top crypto security threat of 2024 — CertiK
CertiK warns that phishing scams are the most significant security threat in 2024, costing the crypto industry over $1 billion across 296 incidents. Phishing attacks involve hackers sharing fraudulent links to steal sensitive information, with three incidents exceeding $100 million in losses. A notable case in May 2024 saw a trader lose $68 million due to an address-poisoning incident, although the attacker returned the funds after 10 days. Private key compromises were the second-largest threat, resulting in over $855 million in losses from 65 incidents. Despite the rise in phishing scams, overall crypto hacks decreased by 52% from 2022, totaling over $2.3 billion in 2024. Security measures are being implemented, including efforts by Binance and the Security Alliance to combat these threats.
