Crypto scammers exploit World Cup ticket demand, TRM warns
TRM Labs said crypto scammers are exploiting World Cup excitement with fake ticketing sites, fixed-match betting pitches, and event-themed crypto promotions. It identified several scam operations, including two fake-ticketing sites and a betting scheme linked to four crypto addresses. The company said criminals prepare infrastructure weeks before major events and move quickly once attention rises. Because crypto transactions are onchain, investigators and compliance teams may detect activity early and limit losses. Authorities have also warned fans: the FBI said spoofed FIFA sites are being used to steal personal data and sell fake tickets, while FIFA cautioned that tickets bought outside official channels can be invalid or canceled. The tournament’s huge attendance and betting demand create a large target for fraud.
