CZ’s Trial Proves it Pays to Cooperate
Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, has been sentenced to four months in federal prison for failing to implement necessary compliance infrastructure. Despite the sentence being more than his lawyers requested, it is less than the official guidelines and what prosecutors sought. Zhao's willingness to accept responsibility and cooperate were noted. He also paid a $50 million fine and Binance settled for $4.3 billion. The relatively short sentence has raised concerns about whether "crime pays," as Zhao will keep his ownership stake in Binance and his vast personal wealth. Binance has agreed to admit an independent compliance monitor for the next three years. Zhao's appearance in court revealed a private family life and emphasized his guilt and willingness to take responsibility.
