DeepSeek Is Building Its Own Claude Code. Beijing Wants the Whole Stack
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab originating from High-Flyer, is launching a team in Beijing to develop "Code Harness," an agentic coding tool aimed at competing with Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. The hiring for this project requires on-site presence in Beijing due to the city's central role in Chinese tech and government oversight. DeepSeek’s job listings specify experience with leading agentic code tools, reflecting intent to rival the major players in autonomous coding, which is an intensely competitive sector. DeepSeek’s advantage lies in its V4 model, including V4 Flash and V4 Pro, which offer agentic capabilities at a fraction of the cost of Anthropic's flagship, making it financially attractive for continuous AI workflows. Building its own tool would allow DeepSeek to control the full developer interface and foster user loyalty. The company has a history of outperforming expectations, evidenced by previous products disrupting market leaders. No release date for Code Harness has been announced, but recruitment is underway for Beijing-based talent.
