Ethereum Crypto Influencer Game 'Fantasy Top' Shutting Down
Fantasy Top, a blockchain-based fantasy sports and social trading card game, will shut down at the end of June. Launched in 2024 on Ethereum’s Blast network, the game allowed users to create lineups using NFT cards of crypto influencers, with in-game performance based on their social media engagement. The platform paid out over $20 million to players and $3.2 million to the featured influencers. Despite initial popularity, Fantasy Top struggled to sustain its NFT trading card revenue model and could not achieve lasting market fit despite experimenting with related products. The game will hold its final competitions on June 18, then shut down entirely a week later. Other offerings like prediction markets will close sooner, with refunds for unused gameplay tickets. The developers cited fundamental incompatibility between the fantasy sports model and crypto, along with a lack of viable business pivots. Investors will be fully reimbursed. The closure reflects broader challenges in the crypto gaming sector, which has seen multiple shutdowns due to dwindling funding and fragmented communities.
