Ethereum Foundation Starts Staking Treasury Amid Vitalik Buterin's ETH Sales
The Ethereum Foundation has begun staking 2,106 ETH (approximately $3.8 million) as the first step toward a planned staking total of around 70,000 ETH ($127 million). Staking is being conducted via solo validators, with the Foundation earning ETH-denominated rewards to support future projects. This move aims to set a standard for transparency and operational management while exposing the Foundation to the same risks as other stakers. The Foundation is also in a period of “mild austerity,” reducing annual spending from 15% to 5% of its treasury by 2030. Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has recently sold ETH worth $6.1 million, with plans to sell up to $44.7 million to support the Foundation. The Foundation is transparent about future ETH sales and regularly evaluates its reserve needs. Leadership changes have occurred, with Bastian Aue named interim Co-Executive Director. ETH’s value has fallen over 2% in the past 24 hours and 37% over 30 days, with market sentiment predicting further declines.
