FBI blames North Korea for $6 billion Binance hack, urges THORChain to block stolen funds

Summary

The FBI attributed the Oct. 29 theft of more than $6 billion from Binance to North Korea’s TraderTraitor operation. Working with the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, it identified hundreds of associated crypto addresses and urged DeFi platforms, swap services and node operators to block transactions linked to them. Investigators said the hackers were converting stolen assets mainly into Ethereum. Chainalysis described laundering through Tron-based lending protocols to evade stablecoin freezes, tracing about $500,000 through the method. A temporary THORChain pause caused by an Ethereum reorganization also disrupted swaps, but was unrelated to the investigation and affected users indiscriminately. THORChain’s co-founder said node operators had no information beyond public data.
