FIFA taps Avalanche to launch dedicated blockchain for NFT platform
FIFA has chosen Avalanche to power its blockchain network for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and digital fan engagement, announced on May 22. The layer-1 blockchain will utilize Avalanche's infrastructure to serve FIFA's five billion fans globally. This decision follows FIFA's plans to launch a network for blockchain-based collectibles. Avalanche's Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility will facilitate integration with decentralized wallets and applications. FIFA Collect will migrate its NFT marketplace to the new Avalanche-powered blockchain, discontinuing support for Algorand-based wallets like Pera and Defly. Users will connect via MetaMask or other EVM-compatible wallets. FIFA's NFT collection was launched ahead of the 2023 Club World Cup, in collaboration with Modex, and FIFA Rivals, a free-to-play soccer game, is set to launch in November 2024 with Mythical Games. Future plans for the blockchain network remain undisclosed.
