France Tax Data Leak Could Fuel Scams, Attacks Targeting Bitcoin Holders
A hacker is reportedly selling a database of French tax records stolen from the country’s tax authority, DGFiP, exposing data on more than 678,000 individuals and businesses. The leaked file is said to include names, birth details, home and email addresses, phone numbers, tax identifiers, income figures, withholding tax rates, family status, and dependents. FrenchBreaches reported that stolen VPN credentials were used in June to access the system and extract taxpayer data before access was cut off, and that DGFiP has confirmed the intrusion. The leak is especially concerning for Bitcoin holders and other high-net-worth taxpayers, since real tax information can make phishing, identity theft, and targeted scams far more convincing. The database is reportedly being offered for several thousand euros.
