France to Phase Out Non-Quantum Encryption as Bitcoin Security Concerns Grow

Summary

France is moving to phase out security products that lack quantum-resistant encryption. Its cybersecurity agency, ANSSI, will stop certifying non–quantum-safe products in 2027 and advises companies to buy only quantum-safe systems by 2030. Because ANSSI certification is required for government agencies and critical infrastructure, this effectively pushes older cryptographic systems out of use. The shift reflects rising concern about “Q-Day,” when quantum computers may be able to break modern encryption, and about “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks on data being collected today. Although such quantum machines do not yet exist, expected timelines are shrinking, with some estimates pointing to 2029–2030. The crypto industry is also preparing: Ethereum has formed a post-quantum security team, Coinbase’s advisory council is urging migration planning, and Stellar has outlined a quantum-safe roadmap. Some executives say the risk is increasing but not yet an emergency.
