Galaxy puts $5 million behind Bitcoin’s race to migrate before quantum risk arrives
Galaxy Digital pledged up to $5 million to speed Bitcoin’s preparation for quantum computing threats. The funding is aimed at developer milestones, research, a Quantum Advisory Council, and practical migration tools. The goal is to advance work before quantum computers become capable of breaking Bitcoin’s current elliptic-curve signatures. The main risk is that a powerful quantum machine could use Shor’s algorithm to derive private keys from exposed public keys. Long-term exposed outputs and short mempool exposure both create attack windows. Draft BIP 360 proposes a soft fork and a new Pay-to-Merkle-Root output to reduce long-term exposure, but it only addresses one of those windows. A separate post-quantum signature scheme would still be needed to protect transactions once public keys are revealed. A full upgrade will require broad coordination among developers, miners, wallets, exchanges, custodians, and users, plus audits, software releases, and gradual fund migration. Galaxy’s funding can accelerate research and tooling, but it cannot decide Bitcoin’s final design or adoption schedule.
