GnosisDAO Approves Gnosis Chain Shift Toward Ethereum Rollup Model
GnosisDAO approved GIP-153, directing Gnosis Chain toward becoming a ZK-proven Ethereum rollup instead of remaining only an independent Layer 1. The Snapshot vote passed with 123,158 GNO in favor. The plan envisions Gnosis Chain settling on Ethereum, inheriting Ethereum’s security while keeping gas paid in xDAI, with a target genesis window in late 2026 or early 2027. This is a governance decision, not an immediate migration. A rollup transition still requires major engineering work, including prover and sequencer design, bridge planning, testing, security review, and ecosystem coordination. The move would deepen Gnosis Chain’s alignment with Ethereum’s rollup-centered roadmap and could strengthen its credibility, liquidity access, and developer appeal while preserving familiar user experience. The proposal also unlocks about 350,000 staked GNO, adding token-economic implications.
