Greece gets first MiCA entrants as watchdog denies Binance-Lagarde claim

Summary

Greece entered the EU’s MiCA crypto regulatory register for the first time, with four providers listed: BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group, Capital Wallet Greece, and Piraeus Bank. Six more providers from Germany, France, and Slovenia were also added, bringing the total register to 359 providers. The listings show Greece’s split MiCA supervision: the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) is the competent authority for three providers, while the Bank of Greece oversees Piraeus Bank. MiCA allows member states to assign oversight to more than one authority. Binance had been seeking Greek authorization that could have enabled EU-wide passporting under MiCA, but it withdrew its application on June 24 before a formal decision. Reports later claimed ECB President Christine Lagarde intervened to stop approval. HCMC rejected those claims, saying no official made the reported remarks, no communication occurred with ECB or Greek government officials about the application, and its denial includes the alleged comments by a vice chair.
