Hong Kong’s path to crypto-friendly leadership expands with tax framework adoption

Summary

The Hong Kong government plans to adopt a global crypto tax reporting framework by 2028, following discussions with the OECD Global Forum. This framework, introduced in June 2023, expands the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) to include crypto asset transactions and establishes an automated system for sharing crypto account data across tax jurisdictions. Legislative amendments are being prepared to align with this framework, expected to be completed by 2026. The first automatic exchange of crypto-related information will occur in 2028, enhancing global tax compliance. Since 2018, Hong Kong has shared financial account information annually to combat tax evasion. The initiative is seen as crucial for maintaining Hong Kong's status as a global financial hub and reflects its commitment to international tax cooperation. Additionally, the city is implementing tax breaks for hedge funds and private equity firms and has published a stablecoin regulation bill to provide clarity in the digital asset sector.
