In Failed Bitfinex Exploit Attempt, Billions in XRP Moved
An unsuccessful exploit attempt was made on the crypto exchange Bitfinex using a feature of the XRP Ledger network. The attempted exploit involved moving nearly $15 billion worth of XRP, which is almost half of the token's market capitalization. However, the actual transfer was only a few cents worth of XRP and failed due to insufficient liquidity. The aim was to trick Bitfinex into accepting the transfer as real, potentially leading to a hack. Bitfinex's systems identified the transfers as a "partial payment", a feature of the XRP Ledger that can reduce the amount received for a payment to succeed. This feature can be exploited by malicious actors to steal money from financial institutions if they assume the amount field of a payment is always the full amount delivered. In 2023, users lost nearly $2 billion to scams, rug pulls, and hacks in the cryptocurrency market.
