Bitcoin core developer Jameson Lopp estimates migrating Bitcoin to post-quantum cryptography will take at least 5-10 years, given the complexity of protocol changes and the need for coordinated fund migrations. He and Blockstream CEO Adam Back agree that quantum computers are not an immediate threat but recommend ongoing vigilance and preparation. Due to Bitcoin’s decentralized nature, upgrading to quantum-resistant standards is more difficult than for centralized systems. The Bitcoin community remains divided: maximalists urge caution around major changes, while VCs see a more urgent threat and advocate faster adoption of quantum-safe solutions.
