Ledger scammers are sending letters to steal seed phrases
Summary
Scammers are sending fraudulent letters to Ledger crypto hardware wallet owners, requesting validation of their private seed phrases to gain access to wallets. The letters, appearing legitimate with Ledger's branding, claim a "critical security update" is necessary and threaten restricted access to funds if not completed. A seed phrase unlocks a crypto wallet, and possession of it allows scammers to control the wallet. Ledger confirmed the letters are scams and warned users against sharing their recovery phrases. The scam may be linked to a data breach from July 2020, where personal information of over 270,000 customers was leaked. Previous incidents included users receiving tampered Ledger devices designed to install malware.
