Marathon’s Utah Landfill Gas Pilot Shows Bitcoin Mining’s Energy Story Is Getting More Practical
Marathon Digital launched a small Bitcoin mining pilot in Utah with Nodal Power using off-grid landfill methane to generate electricity. The site is only 280 kW, but it reported about 92% uptime and power costs near $0.03/kWh. The main significance is not scale but the model: captured methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is turned from an environmental liability into low-cost energy for mining. The pilot highlights a broader shift in Bitcoin mining toward stranded, waste, or off-grid energy sources that reduce pressure on public grids and improve mining’s environmental narrative. Still, one pilot does not prove broad impact. To matter at scale, these projects need reliable gas supply, strong economics, and credible emissions measurements showing how much methane was captured and emissions avoided.
