Mastercard, Borderless test shared identity checks for stablecoin transfers
Mastercard and Borderless will pilot Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework for cross-border stablecoin payments. The test will evaluate whether standardized assurance and governance signals can improve trust, compliance, and risk checks across participants, reducing friction in stablecoin transfers. Borderless says compliance is a major bottleneck and that the model mirrors correspondent banking, where originating compliance is trusted downstream without repeated checks. Mastercard’s role will be limited to verification and governance; it will not process or settle funds in the pilot. The project fits Mastercard’s broader stablecoin push, following its acquisition of BVNK and prior plans to expand settlement support to stablecoins such as USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD, and SoFiUSD.
