Meta Tests Robots to Handle Data Center Work
Meta is testing robots to help run its AI data centers, including machines that can swap networking cables, restart servers, move racks, and inspect equipment. It is working with robots from Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB, aiming to cut labor costs as infrastructure grows. The systems are not yet fully autonomous: they still need human supervision and struggle with obstacles, battery life, visual checks, and dense cabling. Some workers think a successful cable-swapping robot could replace much of certain roles, though that is not Meta’s estimate. The push reflects a broader industry trend: Nvidia, Alibaba, and others are building robot-training systems, while companies like Bedrock Robotics and Mercedes-Benz are testing automation in construction and factories. Advocates say robots can address labor shortages and dangerous work; critics warn of job losses. Meta says it is still hiring and training workers because skilled labor remains scarce.
