Montenegro Justice Minister approves Do Kwon’s extradition to US
Montenegrin Minister of Justice Bojan Božović approved the extradition of Do Kwon to the United States after the Constitutional Court dismissed his appeal. The Ministry of Justice rejected extradition to South Korea, stating that legal criteria supported the U.S. request. Kwon's extradition faced multiple reversals during a lengthy legal battle, with both U.S. and South Korean prosecutors seeking his extradition for various offenses. The High Court of Podgorica initially approved extradition in November 2023, but the final decision was left to the justice minister. In May 2024, Kwon's defense successfully appealed, delaying proceedings. The Appellate Court upheld a ruling for extradition to South Korea in August 2024, but the case returned to the justice minister for further deliberation in September. A decision was reached on October 17, but an appeal halted it briefly. The Ministry of Justice's approval signifies the conclusion of Kwon's multi-year legal proceedings.
