More than half of Ethena’s USDe backing is allocated to lending
LlamaRisk’s October 12 assessment says 51.2% of Ethena’s $4.76 billion USDe backing is allocated to DeFi and institutional lending. The figure does not show how much is currently borrowed or immediately withdrawable. Overcollateralization, custody and exposure controls can reduce credit risk, but access to exit assets also depends on pool liquidity and institutional recall terms, whose exact timelines are not public. Most holders cannot redeem directly with Ethena unless they meet onboarding and eligibility requirements, so they depend on secondary markets and authorized arbitrageurs. Direct redemptions are conditional and subject to asset, fee and contract limits; contract ceilings are not cash availability. sUSDe holders must also complete a governance-set one-to-seven-day unstaking cooldown before receiving USDe, then arrange a separate sale or redemption. The central distinction is between protecting reserve value and making assets available promptly for settlement.
