Morning Minute: Coinbase Puts Tokenized Stocks on Base
Coinbase launched tokenized stocks on Base for eligible users outside the U.S., starting with fractional Apple and Nvidia shares. These tokens represent a direct claim on real shares held by Alpaca, not a synthetic price tracker. Users can self-custody them, trade on Aerodrome, or use them as collateral on Aave. Coinbase built the system on the B20 token standard, which is designed to handle dividends and stock splits without disrupting token balances. This adds to a growing trend of U.S. crypto products being offered abroad but not at home, alongside Coinbase’s recent perpetual futures rollout and Robinhood’s tokenized-stock chain. The move highlights a regulatory gap: tokenized equity rules in the U.S. remain unresolved, while companies keep shipping globally. More Coinbase-issued stocks and other real-world assets are expected soon.
