NFL joins pushback against prediction markets as U.S. Supreme Court asked to act
The NFL urged the U.S. Supreme Court to let states and tribes regulate sports betting on prediction markets, arguing federal CFTC oversight is too weak to protect consumers and game integrity. It cited concerns about bets vulnerable to manipulation, underage wagering and limited agency staffing. The CFTC says it has engaged with the league and offered cooperation. Kalshi says it has tried unsuccessfully to work with the NFL and has data-sharing partnerships with other leagues. The dispute has produced conflicting federal court rulings: one backing the CFTC’s exclusive authority and two favoring state regulation. New Jersey has asked the Supreme Court to resolve the issue. Former senator Chris Dodd and former CFTC chair Gary Gensler also filed briefs opposing the claim that federal law displaced state gambling authority.
