Proof of Play to shut down after blockchain gaming thesis falls short

Blockchain game developer Proof of Play is shutting down after failing to build a sustainable business from its decentralized gaming model. The a16z-backed studio said it could not prove blockchain games could scale into a decentralized internet and will open-source much of its code, artwork, smart contracts, and internal tools. Pirate Nation will live on through the independent Pirate Nation Foundation, which will support the PIRATE token and keep the website running, but Proof of Play points will have no future value. Founder Pirates NFT artwork and IP are now under a CC0 license. Shiba Story Go! was sold to an unnamed third party and will continue separately.
