Russia Will Soon Ban Peer-to-Peer Bitcoin Trading, Central Bank Confirms

Summary

From July 1, 2027, Russian residents will be barred from peer-to-peer crypto trades and certain transfers, including moving assets to personal non-custodial wallets. Crypto trading will have to involve licensed brokers or registered exchange organizations. Banks must also refuse some transfers to and from foreign crypto platforms. Non-qualified investors will face a test and a 300,000-ruble annual purchase limit, while qualified investors have no cap. Crypto payments for domestic goods and services remain prohibited, though crypto can be used in foreign trade settlements. Sberbank has joined the central bank’s exchange registry and plans to launch crypto products in December.
